One night After I first started driving in August 2020 I was called to pick up a woman out by the Salt Lake City airport. I pulled into the hotel parking lot and two girls came out. One of them got in the car and Immediately I could tell that she had an accent on her English. I asked where she was from. She said South Africa.
I said that’s really cool! I asked her how she liked it in Utah. She said she liked it OK but she missed her family. She had been out at the hotel with some friends from Africa and she had missed them. I told her that I thought it would be hard to be all alone without family and friends so far from home. I’m glad she had that opportunity.
Then I got the strongest impression that I should tell her “you know that God loves you more than you could ever imagine, you are his daughter and he has never forgotten you”. I assure you that this is not a normal part of a discussion when you pick up a random person at an airport hotel.
I then was prompted to say “God not only loves you but he knows who you are and what you are going through”. She asked “so God is aware of me”? I said yes! The answer to that question is the fact that I was prompted by the spirit to say the things I just said.
She started to cry and told me that she had been baptized about 11 months previous to her move to Salt Lake. In Salt Lake, due to covid she had felt lost and like she didn’t have any friends. She didn’t feel fellowship by her ward and she had begun to doubt her value in God’s eyes.
I told her that God loved her and I asked her when was the last time she had been to church. She said that it was in January 2020. She had thought about going to go to church but because of Covid they didn’t have church and she felt like she was all alone and no one knew where she was. She told me that she had started having thoughts that she wasn’t important to God because of small sins that she had committed. I asked her when she started doubting herself and her testimony of the church. She looked up with a bit of embarrassment/surprise, thought for a second and said about June. June is when I started to doubt.
I told her that Satan was a liar and that he had whispered in her ear. I told her she needed to stop listening to Satan and start listening and believing God. I told her that God loved her so much that the spirit had given me this message that night. He wanted her to know that he loved her and that he was aware of her.
She said, “that has to be true, how would you have known to say that to me”. The spirit was really strong and she was smiling from ear to ear. She said, I feel like I felt right after I was baptized. She was visibly energized.
I told her to read the Book of Mormon every day, to pray multiple times a day and carry on a constant conversation with her Father in Heaven. I told her that if she would do this that she would not feel alone or forsaken. I told her about how my mission president taught us to be on our knees in our heart in constant prayer, always conversing with God. I told her I thought that might help her stay strong.
She thanked me and before she got out of the car told me that this changed everything. she said how great it was to know that God would send someone to answer her prayers in her time of distress.
I saw God’s hand touch her and lift her that night, what a blessing! I love how God knows when we’re down and knows just what to do to help us. He will send people with his message to lift us.
