I picked up a lady and her daughter in Heber city and started to take them to Park City. I knew it would be a little bit of a ride and they seemed to be quite quiet but when you’re on longer ride you need to chat a little bit so I tried to get a discussion going. I asked where they were from and they said Acapulco Mexico. I told him that I had been there a few years back and they said that it wasn’t like it used to be.
They lamented the fact that there are lots of murders and that you can’t stay out after dark anywhere in that area. We talked about how the people need to rise up but they’re afraid of the repercussions or they just don’t care enough. No one wants to die, everyone’s afraid. She said that her uncle lived here in Park City and told her that she should come up to live and so they did. I felt a prompting right then that this was the time to start discussing the church so I asked her what she felt living in the area and she said she felt peace. I asked her where she thought that peace came from and she said she didn’t know. I told her that it came from obedience to the commandments and the people who live here who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints. She said, oh yeah I went to see one of your temples. I went to the Salt Lake Temple and talked to some people there. She said, I really like your view on the family.
I told her that this was very important to us. I said that we believe the families can sealed together by the power of God. I told her that Peter got that authority from Jesus to seal things on the earth that would be sealed in heaven. Then Peter in turn passed it along to Joseph Smith so that we have the power to do that same thing. Today we seal things on earth that are sealed in heaven. One of those things that we seal on earth that is sealed in heaven is it the family unit. She said that’s beautiful and I love it. I told her that this is the church of Jesus Christ and that our belief in Jesus Christ is what gets us through our hard times. I had a prompting to say something so I did. I told her that she had been through some very terrible horrible things and she suffered quietly inside about these things. I told her she had also made mistakes and felt like she couldn’t ever get on top of these things and I told her that heavenly father didn’t want her to suffer.
I told her heavenly father sent his son Jesus Christ to suffer in the Garden of Gethsemane so that we don’t have to suffer ourselves. He felt the pain of injustice, the shame of embarrassment, the effects of illness and the agony of sin. He suffered all of that for each of us so that he could know how to succor us.
She said, I love Jesus. I asked her if she realized he did all these things for her and she said she had never thought of it like that. I noticed that she began to tear up and I knew that she was feeling the spirit. I knew that she had things that were very weighty on her soul and she was fighting to keep her head above water. I believe that this is why the tears were welling up in her eyes. She started to feel some relief.
When you testify of the love of God and atonement of his son there’s a special sweet spirit that attends that conversation and that was in the car in abundance. I asked her if she felt it and she said yes. I told her that this was the spirit of god and it testifies off truth.
I asked her if she ever heard of the Book of Mormon and she said yes. She said her friend gave her one after she went to Temple Square about a month ago.
I told her that that it was a book written by ancient prophets in America who her her ancestors and that they wrote the prophecies given to them by God. Part of those prophecies included the visit of Jesus Christ to America. I told her this book was written by those prophets and translated by Joseph Smith. I told her Joseph Smith was the first prophet of this dispensation and I shared my testimony of the first vision with her. The spirit was very evident in the car and again I could see tears in her eyes
I told her that Jesus made it so that we could be clean. And when he came to America he taught the people to be baptized so that they could come to him even though they had previously been baptized. She said that she was baptized as a baby and she baptized her children. She asked why we don’t baptize our babies. I said that we believe all little children are saved by Christ, if a baby dies the baby goes directly to heaven because they do not have knowledge of the law so it’s impossible for them to sin.
She said that’s right, I’ve always believed that but I’ve always been taught different. I said these are the words of Christ himself.
I told her that I felt that I was supposed to tell her that God loved her and that he was her father not her jailer. He wasn’t there to see that she was punished but that God had sent his son to make sure that she could have her burdens lifted. I said these things and by this time the tears were streaming down her face.
I asked her if she had ever felt this feeling in her heart before and she said no. I said it’s the spirit of God and it’s the love of God for you manifest through the spirit. I told her that she is God’s little girl and fathers love their little girls. Can you imagine how much a perfect father loves you? That is what you are feeling.
She asked me how I knew these things about her and I said that I didn’t know but God did. I told her that when we’re baptized we get the gift of the Holy Ghost and it whispers the things of God would have us say. These are the words that God had prompted me to say. God knows who she is and knew this would touch her. I told her that because of this she would know the words I was saying were true. She said that’s exactly right.
I asked her if she remembered when I was talking about the power that we had to seal and she said yes. I said the power also gives us the ability to give blessings. Someone who has this power could come to her house and bless her home and her family so that the spirit of God could be there with her to help her. I told her that this would be a good idea. I remembered in my mission that this was absolutely the most amazing way to get into people homes, teach them about prayer, the priesthood and leave the spirit of God to bless the home. We had much success with this.
She readily agreed. I said do you ever see missionaries in the street? She said not really. I said you could go to the church on Sunday morning and ask for the bishop and he could help you out. Then she said I think I should ask my friend who is a member of your church maybe she could help me find the right person to talk to. I chuckled and said, I guarantee that she can help you find the right person to talk to.
By this time we were coming up on the destination and she said that this ride had changed her life. This light she felt from God was something she wants to have in her life and now it’s all right there in front of her to do.
