One night it was very late and I was on my way home. I had a ride take me out to West Valley and I thought that would pretty much do it for me. I forgot to turn off my app so that presented a problem when this particular ride was sent to me. I thought, just do one more ride. I picked the passenger up at the company where she worked. It was very surprising because it was a guys name on the ride but she was clearly not a guy.
She got in the car and I asked, so you’re headed home? She said yes and that she was very happy to be going home from work. She got off early that day and so she was excited about that. I asked her how things were going and she said really well. At first she seemed very happy and calm, a typical late 20’s girl who seemed to be doing just fine.
I was receiving promptings of her being overwhelmed and that there was a lot being put on her plate right now. I prayed quietly for a second and then I started to say the words that were in my heart.
I asked her if she minded me sharing some thoughts I was having. She said that would be ok. I told her that she was feeling a tremendous amount of stress about her ability to take care of the family right now. I told her that I get the feeling that she felt overrun by the demand that her family plus extended family were placing on her. I told her that she felt judged, shunned and inadequate. In the end she just felt overwhelmed.
As I started to speak I could feel the spirit just hit in the car. It was almost like the spirit knew how much time I had (which was only about 12 minutes) in this short ride. I felt that Heavenly Father really needed to hug this daughter of his tonight.
I told her that she felt like she was trapped and that no one knew or understood what she was going through. I told her that she didn’t feel like there was anyone she could talk to about this. I said that she was almost to a breaking point in her mind and this was a cause of great concern to her. I said, you are suffering in silence. You don’t have anyone you feel you can tell.
She started to cry and asked, am I that transparent? I said, no! You understand about the Holy Ghost. When we are baptized we get the gift of the Holy Ghost and it whispers to our hearts the things we should say and this is the message that I felt in my heart that God gave me for you tonight when you need it.
I also knew by the spirit that she was a good member of the church and she was an obedient daughter of our father in heaven. I could feel that and I knew it was true. I asked, do you feel the spirit right now? She said, yes! I feel it so strong. I said, the spirit always accompanies truth. It is how God tells us that the things we are hearing are true. This is how you know that this message is for you.
With her being a member of the church and the spirit present, I felt the impression to talk more about the atonement. This being the case I went straight into the Book of Mormon. I talked about how Alma‘s people in the valley of Helam relied on God and their faith in God. In return through the atonement of Jesus Christ, God lifted their burdens so that they were so light they could barely feel them. Even though they were slaves they were blessed and happy through their faith in the atonement of Jesus Christ. She said she hadn’t remembered reading that like this before and the car lit up with her smile.
I talked to about the Garden of Gethsemane and how Jesus Christ suffered there. He suffered everything so that he could understand what we were going through and so that he could lift us through our problems. I put it out to her that he was a God and therefore could not be killed. For us he just stayed there and took it until it was done and he had bled from every pore. This is how we able to be redeemed. This is how God lifts us through the challenges in life. I said, look to him and live. Look to him and he can lift your burdens.
I told her that because of the atonement, Jesus Christ understood exactly the pressure, exactly the pain and exactly the stress that she was feeling. I said that if she would rely on him, he could lift her like he lifted the people of Alma in the valley of Helam and make it so that she could do this difficult thing that had been required of her at this time.
She said, I can’t believe God sent you to me tonight. It is an answer to my prayers. She said that earlier that day she had prayed for help. She was at a breaking point. She said that she couldn’t believe how fast and directly her prayer was answered.
I told her that God loved her and that he was her father. I told her that she enjoyed a loving father-daughter relationship with him and he loves her more than she could ever know. I said, that’s why he sent Jesus and that’s why he gave me these words to say tonight.
She said, this is exactly what I needed tonight. I was at my breaking point. She reached out and grabbed my shoulder with her hand and said, thank you so much, you will never know how much this means to me. She got out of the car and went inside her home.
