When you eat an elephant you have to start somewhere, let’s get started!

I picked up a girl at the Marriott downtown who had been visiting some friends from out of town. It was the birthday of one of her friends. She got in the car and was acting excited and happy. While she was acting excited and happy the spirit told me that she was over playing it and that really she was devastated on the inside.

I felt prompted that she had really tried hard to be friends with these people and that they were blowing her off. I felt like she was alone and discarded by the people she considered friends.

I asked her if she would mind me sharing a couple of observations with her. She said, no, go ahead. I proceeded to tell her exactly what the spirit was telling me about her friends and what she was feeling in that moment even though she was putting on a happy façade.

She teared up a bit and then asked ,are you a mind reader? I said, no! I told her that in our church when we get baptized we are given the gift of the Holy Ghost. I said that one of the gifts of the Holy Ghost is that it gives you the gift of prophecy and revelation. I said that through the Holy Ghost, God had revealed to me what she was feeling. She was shocked. She said that she didn’t even think that God knew who she was. She said that she wasn’t even sure there was a God. I assured her that indeed there was a God and I bore witness to the fact that what we were feeling there in the car was an effort on his part to show her that he loved her.

I told her that I felt that there was a hole in her life and she was trying to fill it with people and things. I said that it needed to be filled with the spirit of God. She muttered, that is right on, how could he know this? I told her that I wanted her to pay attention to how she felt right now. I asked her how it felt in her heart. She said, peaceful and amazing. I told her that this is how she feels when the spirit of God is with her.

I said that as a daughter of her father in heaven she had developed these feelings with him due to the loving father-daughter relationship she had with him before she was born. I said, your craving to feel this is a hardwired part of who you always have been. You can feel this when you pray, read the scriptures or go to church. She asked me if you can have that feeling all of the time. I said, yes, God is our father and wants to be with us as much as we will have him.

I asked her if she had a Book of Mormon and she said no I grabbed one of the books prepared by the Secrists and gave it to her. I said, when I read this book I feel the spirit of God. This book teaches the gospel and carries his spirit to those who read it. This is your copy. She smiled and thanked me

I asked her if the pain of the rejection and loneliness was still with her. She said, that’s incredible, no, it’s not. It’s gone. I told her that right now this space was filled with the power of God and his spirit. I told her, in the presence of God his love consumes us and makes us feel like we are home.

She said, that’s beautiful, how do you know these things? I told her that I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints and that we are taught through the scriptures and by prophets to rely on God. I told her, we have prophets who speak with God and speak for God to us. By following their counsel we can make sure to always fill that hole with his spirit. She said, that’s amazing.

I sensed that this was all a lot for her right then. I told her that she felt like she was trying to eat an elephant right now and she didn’t know where to start. She laughed hard. I told her that her life wasn’t organized like she wanted it to be and that another big project wasn’t her priority right then. She said, you’re right. I said, God wanted you to have this experience tonight. That’s why he put you in my car. He wanted you to feel his spirit and his love. He wanted to lift you tonight and that’s why he put you in my car.

I told her that right at that moment she was thinking of a friend who was a member of the church who went on a mission and considering whether or not she should approach him about what we were discussing. She said, how did you know that! She said, that freaks me out a bit but in a good way. I said, it’s the same answer, God whispers the things he would have us do and the things he would have us say to our hearts. He expects us to say them. I said, tonight he is focused on you. He wants you to learn to be truly happy and know that you are appreciated and loved. You are his daughter.

I told her that with regard to speaking with that friend, she would feel an urgency develop, an urgency to know for herself the truth. I said that the feeling tonight was a seed that would grow. I told her that God was revealing that friend to her so that she could know where to turn.

She said that this trip had opened her eyes to God and to the church for the first time. I told her she should go to her friend and tell him exactly what had gone on in the car. She said, that’s exactly what I will do.

I asked her where she was from. She said she was from Orem. I said, wow, I’m from Orem. I asked what high school she went to. I ask this because we can’t ask where they live but this is a way around that rule. She said, Mountain View. I told her we used to live over there by Lakeridge and have many good friends there.

She said that growing up in Orem and going to Mountain View you would think that she would have had a greater exposure to the church. She said that she knew a bunch of Mormons. She asked me if they knew these things that we had discussed. I said yes. She laughed and said, it seems like maybe they should have shared something like this with me. She said, I guess that I probably would have just rejected it.

I said, everyone is prepared at different levels and at different times. It seems like this is your time. She said, I think that you are right. This guy I am supposed to talk to is one of the good guys. I have always felt something like this around him. I can’t wait to ask him.

We had arrived at her destination and she was on her phone. I told her thanks and I bore my testimony to her. The spirit was strong and she was smiling. She showed me her phone and I read the text that was on her screen. It was to that guy and the text read, I want you to teach me about the peace you have in your church.

That answer will be awesome!
