Faith is more powerful than knowing

One Saturday I had a few minutes in the morning and I decided that I would just work around Provo and see what I could get. I got a call to pick up a girl at the Glenwood Apartments. It was really hard to find her and I had to call her friend who made the reservation several times to locate her. Our app tells us after a certain amount of time to leave and mark them as no show but I felt like I was supposed to be here on this one so I stayed and kept looking. I felt that This was an important person. Finally I found her.

She got in the car we talked about going to her friends house and that she was from South America. I asked her how she liked it here and she said she loved it because it was so peaceful. I asked her why she thought it was so peaceful. She said because people obey the laws.
I told her that this is true, it’s peaceful because people obey the laws, the laws of God! I said the faith people here have in God makes this a perfect place for those seeking peace.
This is when I got bold and started asking her the questions that were coming to my heart. I asked her if she was a member of the church, she said that she wasn’t.  Following the promptings I said well, not yet! I said that you look like a member and must be considering joining the church.
She asked how I knew. She assumed that someone like her girlfriend had told me about her.  I assured her that no one had told me but that I was just saying what I felt in my heart. I told her it was important to follow the spirit. She said “that’s my problem”.
She was taking the lessons from the missionaries and they were trying to get her to set a baptismal date. She had tentatively set a date for three months in the future so that she could know everything before she was baptized.
We talked about faith and the importance of faith in the conversion process. Faith that the gospel is true does not always come with a complete knowledge of the doctrines. We discussed how no one knows everything and that the best teacher is the Holy Ghost. We discussed how she would get the Holy Ghost after her baptism and be able to learn a lot more
We discussed how in both Nephi‘s vision of the tree of life and the brother of Jared‘s teachings received from God, they were asked if they believed the things that they were going to be taught, not if they knew the things that they were going to be taught. They agreed that they believed those things before they even know what they were.  We discussed how having faith to take that step is a very necessary part of receiving the answer she was looking for.
I felt impressed to talk to her about the answer she had received about the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon and the church.  She was having a hard time discerning whether or not she had received an answer. She didn’t know what it would feel like when she did. I then said, that’s why you put your baptism off in the future three months, it had nothing to do with your knowledge of all of the doctrine.  She nodded in agreement. The spirit was really strong in the car and I testified of the truthfulness of the church, the book of Mormon and God‘s love for each of us.
I could tell in her countenance that she was on fire. I asked her what she was feeling and she said she was feeling amazing. I asked her if she could describe that feeling for me and she said familiar, powerful and tingly. I identified that feeling as the spirit. I told her that this was how God was telling her that these things were true. I said that this is all she would need and that now she knew it was true.
This was part of a text she recently sent to me
“He sentido tan seguro desde cuando usted me hablo acerca del evangelio en tu coche, sabe me trasmitió una paz inexplicable y bonito sentimiento 🙂. “

Translated it says “I have felt very sure since the time you spoke to me about the gospel in your car it gave me an inexplicable peace and beautiful feeling😊.”

She was fired up and ready to go. She agreed. I challenged her to call the Missionaries to discuss a new date with them and pray about it. I told her I wanted to pray for her too if that was OK and gave her my phone number.

She is now baptized and has said to me that that day in the car she had been pondering these exact things and whether or not to continue with the lessons, then God sent me to give her that message and help her feel the spirit. What an amazing day

Behold, I am a disciple of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I have been called of him to declare his word among his people, that they might have everlasting life.

  1. Loved this experience! Such a beautiful testimony. I can only imagine what you felt when she told you “I have felt very sure since the time you spoke to me about the Gospel in your car, it gave me an inexplicable peace and beautiful feeling 😊.” That’s what the Gospel is all about! Only the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ can bring peace to a world that is falling to pieces. Jesus Christ and His teachings are the only source of everlasting love & hope.
    Thank you for your thoughts!
